This year, Christ the King Community Church started its very first Christian book club, here in Milton Keynes. Now, I might be a little biased, but I think it’s wonderful! I’ve discovered there’s something special about knowing you’re part of a friendly group of people, all reading the same book, and then sitting down together over coffee and cake to chat it through.
So now we’ve had the first 3 meetings of our Christian book club, I wanted to tell you a little more about us, what we’ve been reading – and to say, if you’d like to join us, please do!
Our books so far
At our first meeting in May we named our book club Ink and Spirit and started our first book, The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren, a 40 day guide to help the reader discover God’s purpose for their life.
Our second book was Rose Hudson-Wilkin’s autobiography, The Girl from Montego Bay: The Autobiography of Britain’s First Black Woman Bishop;while our third book was a work of historical fiction by Victoria MacKenzie called For Thy Great Pain Have Mercy on my Little Pain, based on the lives of medieval Christian mystics, Julian of Norwich and Margery Kempe. We’re now presently reading non-fiction book The Familiar Stranger by Tyler Statonwhich seeks to connect Biblical teaching about the Holy Spirit with our lived experience. We love variety in our reading!
Our Christian book club meet-ups
We meet once every two months to ensure it’s easy, manageable and relaxing for all of us. Which it is!
For me, I think one of the best things about our book club is the conversation and sense of community. We don’t always agree on everything—and that’s what makes this book club so great. We enjoy some really stimulating conversations and have a lot of fun!
